The design site lies within Gaziantep’s Şehitkamil district, situated between 36004th Street and 36003rd Street. It occupies a prominent urban axis that connects these streets, characterized by a bustling city life and commercial activities to the north, and green landscapes to the south. Surrounding the design area are key landmarks such as Nişantaşı Street and the metropolitan municipality service building, currently functioning as a parking garage.
The project’s context envisions accommodating functions like a Cultural Center, Multi-Purpose Performance Hall, Library, and Workshops, catering to significant pedestrian traffic. Accordingly, the design aims to create environments suitable for urban use across open, semi-open, and closed spaces, providing opportunities for social interaction at various levels. Considering diverse user profiles and usage times, the architectural solution aims to integrate these differences into a unified interface, fostering a multi-layered platform for social interaction and sustainable integration.
Inspired by the city’s folklore heritage, the Art Center design seeks to rejuvenate the disappearing urban fabric and modernize the “Culture Trail”. Integrating traditional values with urban life data forms a cornerstone of the design language, emphasizing integration with the city’s unique identity and environmental preservation. The approach prioritizes sensitivity to local characteristics and historical textures.
The Şehitkamil Municipality Art Center is designed with a permeable and flexible structure, fostering socialization opportunities for city residents beyond activities, leveraging the potential of surrounding public buildings. The design process emphasizes preserving urban memory and repurposing it to meet modern needs.
