Erenkoy Neurological Hospital Campus
Philosophically analyzed, the relationship between humans and nature has evolved alongside humanity’s spiritual development throughout history. Since ancient times, societies have formed to resist nature’s power, inadvertently becoming disconnected from it and losing a sense of belonging. Even in modern urban environments, there’s a persistent yearning to reconnect with nature, seeking its memory and spiritual serenity.
Psychiatrist Engin Geçtan terms this phenomenon the “transitional society,” highlighting the pain of human disconnection from nature. Nature has influenced every aspect of human existence and remains central to their well-being. In fields like hospital design, psychiatrists and designers prioritize reconnecting patients with nature’s healing powers.
Roger Ulrich’s research underscores this, revealing a 21% reduction in medication use among patients who have access to green spaces, affirming nature’s positive impact. The Erenköy Psychiatric and Neurological Diseases Hospital Bizimköy Campus project embodies this awareness, integrating respect for nature into its architectural and landscape design. The symbiotic relationship between the building and green spaces aims to provide tranquility and harmony for patients.
This approach extends to hospital clinics, where a low-rise, fragmented architectural design encourages seamless indoor-outdoor transitions and integration with natural landscapes. Gardens surrounding each clinical unit enhance patient healing and reconnect them with nature through permaculture areas.
Preserving natural structures and integrating landscape elements strengthen the campus’s bond with its physical environment. Features like promenades and lawn amphitheaters not only enhance the physical landscape but also contribute to patients’ mental well-being and healing process.
In essence, the Erenköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital Bizimköy Campus project strives to optimize nature’s positive effects on human health through thoughtful architectural and landscape design. This holistic approach aims to rekindle the human-nature relationship and bridge the disconnection brought about by modern urban life.
