Bakırköy Cumhuriyet Square

Bakırköy Cumhuriyet Square, situated in one of Istanbul’s historically significant districts, traces its roots back to the ancient period known as Hebdomon. Over time, Bakırköy has evolved from a fishing village into a densely populated residential area, shaped by industrialization and urbanization. Cumhuriyet Square serves as a central public space in this dynamic region, yet it faces challenges that hinder its full potential. This proposal aims to explore how Cumhuriyet Square can be transformed into a more functional and aesthetically vibrant space by addressing existing issues and proposing solutions.

The current state of Cumhuriyet Square is marked by significant challenges, particularly related to traffic management and pedestrian access. Integration issues with Marmaray, YHT (High-Speed Train), and new metro lines impact the square’s functionality. Additionally, the inadequate integration of Fahri Korutürk Street and the underutilization of Bakırköy Underground Bazaar further limit the square’s potential.

The proposal advocates various conceptual approaches to rethinking Bakırköy Cumhuriyet Square. Emphasizing its role as a hub for communal living and cultural interaction, the square is envisioned to foster democratic participation and social cohesion.

Design principles are pivotal in enhancing Cumhuriyet Square’s functionality and public appeal. Key solutions include creating Cumhuriyet Park as an integrated green space to enhance pedestrian access and establish high-quality public areas. Underground solutions and improved transportation stops are also proposed to address traffic challenges effectively.

Integrating green spaces and recreational areas aims to facilitate year-round events and increase public engagement. Emphasizing ecologically sustainable and visually appealing landscaping further enhances the square’s environmental quality.
