Korean War Memorial Site and Visitor Center

The Korean War Memorial Area and Visitor Center is situated at the northern entrance of Lüleburgaz, enveloped by its natural surroundings. The design endeavors to forge a distinctive identity by blending cultural and architectural elements from Korea and Lüleburgaz. Key transportation routes such as Pınarhisar Road and Hamitabat Road delineate the boundaries of the design area.

The architectural approach integrates the needlework construction style indigenous to Thrace and utilizes local materials, ensuring harmony with the natural environment and adherence to sustainability principles. Preservation of the existing tree canopy and seamless integration of the building into the natural landscape are paramount. Central to the design philosophy is the aim to offer visitors diverse sensory experiences.

The visitor center enriches spatial encounters through sensory elements like sound, smell, and touch. For instance, a lavender garden situated northeast of the ceremonial area offers visitors olfactory delights carried into the building by the wind. Interior spaces emphasize the tactile qualities and versatility of wood.

Furthermore, the design seeks to underscore themes of peace and humanist values amidst reflections on war. The architectural language and interior spaces convey messages of hope and unity to visitors. Designed as a dynamic structure, the building requires regular maintenance and is expected to develop character over time.

In conclusion, the Korean War Memorial Site and Visitor Center adopts an approach that not only enhances architectural aesthetics but also enriches visitors’ sensory experiences. The use of natural materials ensures the site retains a living essence, embodying fundamental design principles as a space commemorating war while emphasizing peace and humanist values.
