Social Housing C
The project area selected for the Çanakkale Municipality Social Housing Area Urban Renewal National Architectural Project Competition has been thoroughly analyzed, focusing on environmental integration, particularly through green area strategies, and critically evaluating recent trends in urban transformation. The initial phase involved a comprehensive understanding of the competition area, including its social and physical context. This understanding was derived from examining competition requirements, studying the area’s social and physical characteristics, and conducting on-site observations.
The conceptual framework for the project was shaped by these investigations, leading to concrete decisions on urban pattern, transportation, population density, and the green open space system.
Green Area Continuity and City Park Formation: A primary objective within the project area is the development of a city park designed to connect the recreational spine planned around Sarıçay, extending on an east-west axis in the southwest of the area. This park is envisioned as a continuous extension penetrating towards the project site. Green areas branching off from this major green spine within the project area have been integrated into a green corridor within the settlement, proposing the largest city park in Çanakkale City Center.
Positioning of Blocks: The proposed settlement is situated on the outskirts of the project area, strategically aligned with the green area strategy. Masses in the settlement plan are positioned to encircle the city park spatially, integrating with public, social, cultural, and commercial units on the ground and first floors. Residential blocks are linearly arranged around these social, cultural, and commercial areas, forming a coherent settlement model. Ground floors are kept as open as possible to define the city park structure, ensuring access from all directions.
Social Life Range and Pedestrian Promenade: The Social Life Range, integrated into the city park, runs parallel to Tuğsavul Street in the northwest, serving as a specialized open space for communal use by neighborhood units formed around it. The proposed pedestrian promenade includes areas that regulate social and commercial interactions between blocks, enhancing neighborhood connectivity.
Housing Typology: Residential blocks feature adjacent housing typologies with central staircases. Multi-storey blocks face the boulevard, while low-rise blocks are oriented towards the park. Each block accommodates residences organized linearly around vertical circulation cores, offering various types such as intermediate, corner, and end units of different sizes and features. A modular system allows flexibility in combining 3+1, 2+1, and 1+1 flats within the same block configuration.
Vehicle Traffic and Parking System: Access to the project area is primarily through Tuğsavul Street and 30 August Street, forming boulevards in the northwest direction. The area is bordered by roads on all sides, facilitating access to social, commercial, and residential zones from multiple directions. Underground car parks beneath the blocks are accessed from perimeter roads, with a preference for indoor parking to minimize hard surfaces and comply with regulatory requirements.
This integrated approach aims to enhance urban livability through sustainable design principles, fostering community engagement and environmental harmony within the urban fabric of Çanakkale.
