Ahlat Youth Center

The Ahlat Youth Camp design area is surrounded by Lake Van to the south, a stadium to the west, and residential areas to the north and east. The area north of the Ağrı-Bitlis Highway is designated for accommodation, educational and cultural facilities, and recreational and sports uses. This area is divided into three parts by channels created as part of a stream improvement project.

Ahlat has been a significant settlement throughout history, especially renowned for its Selcuklu tombs and cemeteries. The design area is characterized by low-rise residential buildings and extensive use of Ahlat stone, with a predominance of pitched roofs. The buildings are positioned to preserve views of Lake Van.

The project aims to reinterpret the geographical and cultural identity of the area with a modern approach. The structure is compactly oriented north-south to minimize visual impact on the surrounding urban fabric’s view of Lake Van. Inspired by Selcuklu construction traditions, the design reimagines the tent typology with local materials.

The project considers the site’s topographical variations, organizing a lower ground floor that integrates social components. This level includes a conference center, restaurant, and spa, connected to outdoor sports and event areas. A passage beneath the main road links to the sports area on the Lake Van shoreline. Accommodation units are planned on the ground and upper floors, with galleries and bridges connecting different functions.

A bridge extending from the stadium on the west side to the structure and the camp area has been proposed, emphasizing the entrance inspired by the Selcuklu monumental gate. This bridge, which connects the site divided by channels, is intended to be a living pier used for various sports functions.
