Lüleburgaz Bus Station
Context
Transportation structures serve as convergence points with their cities. Therefore,
beyond functionality, they should hold symbolic value, be unique, and memorable.
Our goal is to provide the city of Lüleburgaz with an intercity terminal complex that
aligns with contemporary architectural criteria, while being functional and socially
engaging. The project is meticulously designed based on detailed analyses to add
value to the city.
The project site is located at the intersection of Murathüdavendigar Street and İstiklal Street on the Edirne-Istanbul D100 highway. The existing terminal at this site was insufficient, so while maintaining the existing entrances and exits, a new orientation was established.
Our proposal positions the project linearly along the east-west axis, and the
remaining area of the terminal complex is shifted towards the southern boundary of
the site to include it in the recreational area. This layout allows the symbolic shell,
which is the focal point of the design, to become an integral part of the recreational
area and ensures the structure is perceived with its symbolic shell from the Edirne-
Istanbul highway.
The operational plan of the building situates the intercity bus terminal on the southern
side (main road), while the platforms serving rural areas are located on the northern
side. The effort to achieve a unified space within the terminal has played a significant
role in the interior organization. Incoming and outgoing passengers are separated by
commercial areas and ticket counters designed in the central area, while spacious
waiting and social areas are provided for passengers.
At the western end of the terminal, where it meets the city, a public forecourt
activated by breaking the symbolic shell has been designed. This area, supported by restaurants, cafes, and commercial spaces, provides a place not only for terminal
users but also for the local community to spend time.
In conclusion, by adopting a design approach that integrates with the city and
prioritizes social use, a transparent structure and a symbolic canopy for the city have been designed. The intercity bus terminal, which is both functional and symbolic, also offers social spaces that provide opportunities for meaningful engagement during waiting times.
